What is deep tissue massage?
Deep tissue massage is a technique that uses increased pressure to affect “deeper” tissues of the body. This term is used loosely in the massage industry and can be described as more effective, however too deep of pressure can cause injury, muscle strain and increased tension in the body. “No pain, no gain” is not a term we like to use as it can cause clients to view deep or painful pressure as something they need to endure to feel better. We use the edgework technique, which is to apply the ideal level of pressure to produce the greatest amount of tension or stress reduction in the client, with the least amount of resistance or negative reaction in the client’s neuromuscular system. The edge is different for everyone and it can change rapidly, using the correct level of pressure determines how quickly and efficiently a client’s neuromuscular and myofascial structure will relax.
What should I do to prepare for my massage?
To ensure you have the best possible experience we recommend several tips when preparing for a massage:
- Please hydrate before and after your massage.
- Wear loose and comfortable clothing.
- Please come ready to communicate your needs. We are happy to adjust pressure, temperature, music volume, work longer on a particular area of the body, or move on if you request it
- Prior to receiving a massage, it is the responsibility of the client to keep the massage therapist informed of any medical treatment currently being given or prescriptions they are taking, and to provide written permission from the physician, chiropractor, physical therapist, etc., that the massage may be given.
- Prior to each massage session, the treatment plan will be discussed with you. At your first visit with us you will be asked to sign the treatment consent form stating that you have read the information, understand it, and agree to comply with the professional massage therapy procedures. Clients who we have not seen for at least a year may also be asked to fill out this form.
What clothing should I wear to my appointment?
Please wear loose and comfortable clothing. You may choose to leave on as much clothing as is desired to feel comfortable. Our client will always be modestly draped and only the area being massaged will be exposed. You will be constantly informed of which areas of the body are to be massaged. Our clients may refuse any massage technique or area of the body at any time.
When is it safe to receive a prenatal massage?
According to the American Pregnancy Association, “Women can begin massage therapy at any point in their pregnancy – during the first, second, or third trimester. Many facilities will refuse to offer massage to a woman who is still in her first trimester because of the increased risk for miscarriage associated with the first 12 weeks of pregnancy” …At Knox Muscle Therapy, we ask for a note from your physician if you are in your first trimester of pregnancy.

Will my pain be resolved after one session?
Results from massage therapy and clinical bodywork vary greatly and there is no guarantee that your issue or pain will be completely resolved after one session. We do guarantee that you will leave your first session more relaxed and educated on a treatment plan to help alleviate pain and discomfort in the future.
Will I be sore after my massage?
Soreness is definitely a possible outcome of a massage, however at Knox Muscle Therapy we try to avoid applying pressure that is too deep or intense. It is important that the therapist and client maintain a close rapport and open communication throughout the session so that the therapist can stay attuned to the client’s neuromuscular sensitivity and make moment-to-moment pressure adjustments as necessary. While it is the therapist’s responsibility to watch for cues, it is the client’s responsibility to inform the therapist about whether pressure is too deep, not deep enough or just right.
What forms of payment are accepted?

Am I supposed to tip my massage therapist?
We do not expect tips from our clients. You will not be asked to leave a tip by anyone from Knox Muscle Therapy but if you would still like to leave one, gratuity is always appreciated.
